Oregon Pinot Party! - November 20

Experience a Pinot Noir/Pinot Gris Master Class featuring the mind-blowing wines of Oregon's unique Antiquum Farm.

Instructor: Amber Janelle Brown of VOS Selections

Stephen Hagen and his wife Niki purchased and planted the property that became Antiquum Farm in 1999. Located in Junction City, at the southern end of the Willamette Valley, the vineyard consists of roughly 20 acres of vines planted on two high-elevation, south-facing parcels with thin Bellpine soil. Here, Stephen developed a system of regenerative agriculture a step beyond organic and biodynamic. He refers to it as grazing-based viticulture, or more poetically, joy-based agriculture. By treating the entire vineyard/farm as a self-contained, self-regenerating ecosystem where sheep, pigs, geese, and chickens graze year-round, and never irrigating or amending the soil, he can take Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris to extremes – with ripeness levels that rival California, and acid levels that rival Champagne.

Currently, most of their fruit is used in their own wines; 9/10 of an acre is grown for Harper Voit. In the past, they also sold fruit to other top Willamette wineries, including Antica Terra and Holocene Wines. Their contract fruit prices are among the highest in Oregon, rivaling other Willamette “Grand Cru” sites like Shea Vineyard. Winemaker Andrew Bandy-Smith's cellar methods are minimalistic – spontaneous fermentation, no fining or filtration – but precise, resulting in clean, balanced wines of, in Stephen’s words, time and place.MIt is in Tuscany, the birthplace of the Renaissance, that wine has her deepest ties to high art, religion and politics. Tuscany is home to three of Italy’s most majestic red wines: Chianti, Brunello di Montalcino and Vino Nobile de Montepulciano, all based on the noble Sangiovese grape. Come taste what makes each of these wines tick. We’ll also explore the popular, internationally styled “Super Tuscan” category, as well as the region’s famous white wine, Vernaccia di San Gimignano, and the sweet sipper, Vin Santo. Fine Italian cheeses and accompaniments will round out our enlightening Tuscan tour.
